A touch of fall

The flowers of summer are still blooming but hints of crimson and gold are starting to emerge and temperatures are slowly beginning to drop.

Fall colors

In a few weeks, the birds will head south, sweaters will replace summer clothes, and fall will be here in all its glory. Since autumn officially started yesterday, I decided it was time for a new theme with fall colors. Leave a comment and let me know what you think.

In addition to the leaves changing color, houses are decked out for Halloween, there are pumpkins on most street corners, and the stores are loaded with Thanksgiving and Christmas decorations.

It’s also the busiest time of year in terms of festivals around the world. The Unifour area (Alexander, Burke, Caldwell, and Catawba counties) in the Western Piedmont is no exception. Here are a few current and upcoming events for September and October.

Sep. 23 – The Hiddenite (pron. Hid-night) Celebration of the Arts was held yesterday. They had crafts, storytelling, clogging, a dance theatre and several types of live entertainment. The Folklife Pavilion gave demonstrations of folk life and folk art forms. A variety of vendors provided pit cooked chicken (yum!), greek specialties, funnel cakes, fresh lemonade, etc.

Sep. 30/Oct. 1 -Murray’s Mill Harvest Folk Festival

Oct. 6-7 – Alexander County Fall Rodeo

Oct. 13, 14, 15 – The big deal for Hickory is Oktoberfest held in Downtown Hickory. The festival attracts 100,000 visitors every year.

Oct. 17-21 – Alexander County Fair

Oct. 21 – Taylorsville Hometown Apple Festival
