Like a small grey coffee pot sits the squirrel.
— Humbert Wolfe —
In 1969, the North Carolina legislature adopted a bill making the gray squirrel the official state mammal. During deliberations, Representative Basil Barr stated: “The gray squirrel is thrifty. He buries nuts.” Representative Henry Boshamer replied, “Any animal that buries nuts would be dangerous to this General Assembly.”
At any given time, there are at least 20 of the little buggers chattering in my yard. They’re so busy raiding corn from the bird feeders they don’t have time to bury nuts!
